An illustration commission may include a subject of the client's choice expressing themselves through poses, backgrounds, and lighting. The client may choose to leave out the background and lighting for a simple render of the character. Complexity of the project may come with an additional cost (Whether it be through accessories like complex armor or backgrounds).
A Mass Character board is my style to design a ton of fun elements connected to each other to create one bigger picture which represents the relationship of all of these characters and the objects around them, a world within a painting. Prices vary typically based on the subject and research needed.
